Tropical Indulgence in Tahiti

Becs 4

There’s something utterly transporting about French Polynesia. Just a few hours’ flight from New Zealand, Tahiti and her islands offer a tropical escape that blends lush landscapes, warm turquoise waters & French-influenced cuisine.

It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, relax and soak up every moment—three things I always look for in the perfect island getaway!

I’ve just returned from exploring this spectacular part of the world with my family, and did not disappoint. For those seeking comfort, authenticity, and a hint (or a lot) of indulgence, this destination is a perfect match.

Why Tahiti?

Becs 5

Tahiti isn’t just a honeymoon destination—though it does romance beautifully. It's also ideal for the seasoned traveller who wants more than just a sun lounger, or perhaps someone looking for a change from Fiji or Rarotonga.
You’ll find rich Polynesian culture, pristine nature, and stunning resorts that balance barefoot luxury with thoughtful detail.
The climate is warm year-round, the people are genuinely welcoming, and they just understand what “luxury” is all about.

Island by Island

Becs 1 v2

Tahiti is the gateway—home to the international airport and the bustling capital, Papeete. While often just a stopover, it’s worth spending a night or two. Explore the colourful markets, stroll along the waterfront, and enjoy your first taste of poisson cru (absolutely delicious Tahitian-style marinated raw fish) or the local Roulettes (food trucks) which we really loved visiting in the evenings.

Moorea, just a short ferry ride away, is a green paradise. Think sharp peaks, lush valleys, and crystal-clear lagoons. It’s a fantastic island for those who want a mix of soft adventure and luxury, with great hiking, diving, and high-end resorts that blend into the landscape with easy accessibility.

Huahine is a hidden gem and was one of my favorites—less developed, more relaxed, and deeply connected to traditional Polynesian life. It’s ideal for travellers wanting peace, authenticity, and a strong sense of local culture. You won’t find flashy resorts here, but the natural beauty and slower pace are what make it special.

Becs 2 v2

Raiatea is known as the spiritual heart of French Polynesia and was also a favourite for me, with ancient temples (known as marae), lush rainforests, and a quiet charm. It feels more local and less touristy.

Taha’a, just a short boat ride from Raiatea, is all about the senses. This is where vanilla is grown, and you can smell it in the air. The island is peaceful and fragrant, and many of the luxury overwater bungalows here face the stunning silhouette of Bora Bora.

Bora Bora is the showstopper. Famous for its unreal blue lagoon and iconic Mount Otemanu, it’s where you go to be wowed. Yes, it’s luxurious and yes, it’s absolutely worth it. Whether you’re sipping champagne in your overwater villa or snorkelling with manta rays, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression.

Getting Around

Becs 6 v2

Moving from island to island is part of the adventure—inter-island flights are quick and scenic, or you can travel by ferry between some of the closer spots like Tahiti and Moorea.
Cruising is also a beautiful way to explore, allowing you to unpack once and wake up somewhere new each day, with the added bonus of seeing the islands from the water.

Cruising

Paul Gauguin Cruises offers a luxurious and intimate way to explore the islands of Tahiti and beyond. Designed specifically for navigating the shallow lagoons of French Polynesia, the ship feels more like a boutique resort than a traditional cruise. With spacious suites, exceptional service, and an all-inclusive experience it’s a seamless way to take in the beauty, culture, and serenity of the region—without ever repacking your suitcase.

Windstar Cruises offers a completely different but equally special way to experience Tahiti, with their signature masted sailing yachts bringing a sense of romance and adventure to every voyage. The atmosphere on board is relaxed yet refined, with fewer guests, open decks, and a strong focus on personalised service. You'll visit smaller ports and hidden gems that larger ships can’t reach, all while enjoying fine dining, water sports straight from the back of the ship, and breathtaking views under sail. It’s ideal for travellers who value a more intimate, immersive journey through the islands.

Becs 3 family v2

If you’re craving a holiday that balances indulgence with authenticity, and nature with comfort, French Polynesia delivers in spades. It’s the kind of place where you can disconnect, reset, and reconnect—with yourself, your partner, or simply with the world around you.

I’d love to help you plan a journey that’s as relaxed or adventurous as you like, with every detail taken care of—just as a trip to paradise should be.
